“If we do not act now, extinction may be humanity’s most enduring legacy.”

Earth Day 2019 was celebrated on April 22nd, with this year’s theme “Protect our Species” highlighting the astounding rate of species lost to human influence. It was 49 years ago, on April 22nd, 1970, that millions of people took to the streets to protest the damage caused by 150 years of unchecked industrial development. Today, Earth Day is a global event in which more than 1 billion people in 192 countries take part during the largest civic-focused day of action in the world, according to the Earth Day Network. The theme for this year’s Earth day comes amongst what scientists have called “The 6th Mass Extinction”, due to the astounding rate at which species are going extinct.

Industrial agriculture is killing the very species it depends on. While all species have an intrinsic value beyond their usefulness to humans, many of them provide invaluable ecosystem services. Regenerative agriculture presents a very real alternative to industrial agriculture. It employs methods specifically intended to increase soil biodiversity, which ripples out to ultimately benefit the many animals otherwise facing displacement and extinction from industrial agriculture. Organic farming methods are also beneficial to biodiversity. At Primal we use both regenerative and organic methods alongside the latest technology and sustainable techniques to operate the largest commercial neem plantation in the world. We are living proof that sustainable practices can be used to grow crops at a commercial scale, protecting local wildlife and helping pollinators thrive by conserving local vegetation. This Earth Day, we celebrate by reaffirming our commitment towards the sustainable future of this planet.
