Our Fate is Tied to the Ocean

by Carmen in News

The importance of our oceans can’t be overstated; they cover 71% of the world’s surface, contain 97% of the earth’s water and account for 99% of living space on the planet. Oceans provide us with food, transportation, energy, biodiversity and ensure climate regulation and many other aspects that modern society has taken for granted for several years. Most information about the ocean’s key role in safeguarding our planet’s health has only recently surfaced, 95% percent of the ocean is still unexplored and in terms of understanding our planet and evolving as a society that does not exploit, but nurtures the oceans, there’s still a long road ahead of us. This World Ocean Day it’s important to take the time to remind ourselves that our fate is tied to the ocean, now more than ever.

We at Primal believe that the only way to save our oceans and our planet is through the disruption of current business models and the creation of symbiotic ones which benefit both people and the environment. With our personal beauty and care brand, ViTA, we have created the first bottle in the world made entirely from 100% OceanBound recycled plastic, sourced from coastal areas where plastic can reach the oceans. We use labels that easily separate in the recycling process to ease conversion into post-consumer applications.

Chemical substances used in agriculture represent another major ocean pollutant. It is estimated that 80% of marine pollution comes from land and nonpoint source pollution from agricultural runoff is a major contributor. Agricultural chemical inputs that reach the ocean contribute to the creation of harmful algae blooms that overwhelm marine ecosystems by depleting oxygen in the water and poisoning marine life. Through our agricultural project in Brazil, we protect the surrounding ecosystem by using only organic agricultural inputs which have no negative effects on the environment.

World Ocean Day is a great time to remember that the health of our ocean will require disruption and re-inventing of current business models, as well as a lifetime commitment – one that Primal looks forward to tackling everyday through sustainable solutions and innovations.

We should give life back, to that which gives us life.
