ViTA: 2018 SPC Breakthrough Innovator of the Year

by Carmen in News

Primal is proud to announce that our neem powered beauty and personal care brand, ViTA, has been awarded the 2018 Sustainable Packaging Coalition’s (SPC) Innovator of the Year Award for Breakthrough Process. The SPC is a membership-based collaborative that believes in the power of major industry to make packaging more sustainable and strives to create packaging that is not only good for people but also for the environment.

“For years, society has taken the importance and interconnected nature of the ecosystems of our planet for granted. The plastic epidemic that currently plagues our oceans is just one example of the unsustainability of current business and consumption models. We are at the point of change, where disruption of business models and true innovation should benefit both people and the environment. We as the human population have the power and ability to drive change and ensure we create a better future for our planet. The appetite for sustainable solutions has never been higher than now.” Anthony Archer, Primal Group CEO

ViTA´s bottles are the world’s first and currently only bottles to be made entirely from 100% OceanBound recycled plastic. OceanBound plastic, sourced through our packaging partners Envision Plastics, is defined as plastic found in high-risk coastal areas where there is no formal collection system and plastic waste is most likely to enter and pollute the ocean. The award is a testament to our wider commitment to a more sustainable future for our planet, with one of our aims being to stop plastic waste from entering the ocean food-chain where it would remain for over 400 years, destroying one of the world’s most valuable natural resources.

ViTA Shampoo and Conditioner bottles – the world’s first to be made from 100% OceanBound plastic

Plastic in the ocean is one of the greatest waste problems that our world currently faces. Plastic accounts for 80% of all waste that accumulates in the oceans, with an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean every year, 5 trillion pieces of plastic currently afloat on the ocean’s surface and 70 million tons already resting on the ocean’s floor. It is now found in the deepest reaches of the ocean and even in the remote Arctic Ocean. By developing the first ever 100% OceanBound plastic bottle, we have created a sustainable solution to the growing plastic epidemic that is plaguing our planet’s oceans, giving new value to waste that would most likely have entered the oceans, and integrating it into the new plastics economy based on a circular model of zero waste.

Together with Envision Plastics, Primal aims to ensure transformational change in the packaging industry in order to reduce the use of virgin, petroleum-based resins that are toxic and dangerous to society and the environment, and usher in a new era of smart recycled plastic sourcing. Since the 1950’s, 18.2 trillion pounds of plastic has been produced, the equivalent of 1 billion elephants in weight. It is estimated that over 80% of that total weight remains in landfills or floating in the oceans, damaging the natural environment. If present production rates of virgin plastic resin continue, by 2050, there will be 12 billion metric tons of plastic in landfills and more plastic in the ocean than fish. Since packaging is the largest end-user market segment, accounting for over 40% of total plastic usage, it is the ideal category to introduce recycled OceanBound plastic, creating value for plastics in danger of polluting the oceans and replacing virgin resins in the process. We hope others will follow our lead and join in using ocean plastics in their products and packaging now that we’ve proved it possible.
